Hydrating, enhancing, protecting and healing the skin from every angle. Mutton Tallow (my absolute favorite tallow to work with) and Jojoba infused with Naupaka and real Vanilla bean, skin friendly probiotics, a powerful antioxidant complex THD Ascorbate, and Non GMO Emulsifying wax and preserved with the natural synergy preserve, coconut derived

THD Ascorbate is an incredibly stable (no risk of oxidation) oil soluble form of vitamin C that is non irritating and so gentle. The fatty acid structure allows it to better penetrate the skin. Having vitamin C in your skin care truly takes the product to the next level. Protecting your skin from free radicals, aiding in collagen production and so much more.

I've added probiotics to this skin food at the end once it's cooled. Probiotics offers such a wonderful shield from bad bacteria and parasites, allowing it to protect you from many common skin ailments.

I'm going to roll into why I'm starting to lean further in to our tallow products. After working with almost every kind of Tallow I could (Bison, Bear, Sheep, Cow ect) I realized my absolute favorite to work with is Mutton. So that's what I use for all of these. Its so soft, light and fluffy and smells fantastic. During our healing journey, we've experienced such tremendous healing from animal products. I could go into story after story with you, all backed by time honored traditions. These are the methods our ancestors used! The original care. That's why we started making the herbal bison bone broth, the magic marshmallows and incorporating tallow into our products. I decided to really dive deeper on this and pursue what excites my heart. Most natural products we use on our skin these days are filled with inflammatory PUFAs which are unstable and can be toxic to the body. Tallow on the other hand is far more balanced and offers stability and slows oxidation. Tallow is also loaded with bioavailable nutrients, both for your skin and internally. Let's go down the rabbit hole of polyunsaturated fatty acids- aka PUFAs.

Most of our favorite skin care products are made with PUFAs and they're touted to be anything and everything for our skin. I've certainly used plenty of them for myself, for my family and in products. They have so many great qualities, and I'm not going to sit here and say they're all bad, but moderation is certainly key as with everything. Essentially, the issue with PUFAs is that they are incredibly unstable and this leads to oxidation (damage and deterioration) when they're exposed to light, heat or air (so, anytime they're on our skin). Their molecules have double bonds, rendering them weak and easily broken. So why does any of this matter? Well, when these oils on your skin oxidize it creates a free radical cascade which damages what may have been previously UNdamaged lipids in your skin. PUFAs have now been identified as the main culprit of cellular damage. In fact, there have actually been studies done of internal use of PUFAs vs not, and how quickly the individual consuming PUFAs skin starts to get damaged and deterioration sets in, because what you eat affects your skin too.

This is why we are making the transition (however, surprisingly we were already using relatively no PUFAs) to only using MUFAs (monounsaturated fatty acids) like Jojoba and SFAs (saturated fatty acids) aka Tallow!! SFAs have no molecular double bonds, which means there isn't any opportunity for oxygen to squeeze in and oxidation to occur. Some other SFAs you've been seeing us utilize are Lanolin, Cocoa Butter and things like that.

Now, what about the Tallow and Ghee products to be used internally. Well, there's a whole laundry list of benefits, but also the nutritional value is astounding. The amount of bioavailable vitamins and minerals that these time honored foods have is incredible. Did you know you don't get hydrated from water? You NEED minerals with it. Your body can't absorb your water intake without minerals. That's why I always go on and on about Nourishing Herbal Infusions. But having a diet high in vitamins and minerals is so important in staying hydrated, which also results in hydrated skin.

I want to tell you a little story about the star of the show, Naupaka. I used to take my son to the beach every morning to watch the sun rise up over the ocean. We would wake up at 5am, I would strap him into the toddler seat on the bike and we would peddle down to the beach. He would wade in the water, dig sand castles and snuggle with me as the sun came up. We got to witness so many magical moments. From weddings and maternity shoots to the sky lighting pastels (or my favorite: deep reds and oranges when a storm was approaching) and so much more- every.single.morning. There was a group of old timers that met at the beach at the same spot almost every morning too. We had so many nice conversations and I appreciated their wisdom. One morning, the Uncle I talked to most, started telling me about Naupaka. Now, this plant is everywhere and I've seen it all my life and never thought much about it -except that it made a great hiding spot when I was a kid (and an even better hiding spot as a teenager partying at the beach )- and then eventually as an adult learning about its role at providing native birds a home. Anyways, he started telling me about the berries and how much relief they give to man-o-war stings. It made so much sense, the remedy is always close by. Then he told me about how the leaves were used by the ancient Hawaiians as sun protection. Intrigued and in awe, I went home and dug deeper in my studies and did some experimenting and was so excited by the results! Not only was this plant amazing for sun protection, but also for over all skin care! How was such an amazing plant being overlooked by so many?! That's how I learned of Naupaka, and I owe it all to the wise Kanaka on the beach. It's so incredibly hydrating and stimulates cellular regeneration. It has wonderful anti-inflammatory properties, is cooling and soothing. Such an incredibly plant.

There's a beautiful legend of Naupaka. If you've ever seen the flowers you'll notice that the Beach Naupaka actually look like half flowers. The Mountain Naupaka also has half flowers, but on the opposite side. They come together to make a whole.

"It is said that two lovers, greatly devoted to each other, came to the attention of the Goddess Pele who had found out that the young man appeared to him as a stranger. But no matter what Pele did the lovers had always remained devoted to each other. Angered, Pele chased the young man into the mountains, throwing molten lava at him. Pele's sisters witnessed this and to save the young man from a certain death they changed him into the mountain Naupaka. Pele immediately went after the young woman and chased her towards the sea - but again Pele's sisters stepped in and changed the young lover into beach Naupaka. It is said that if the mountain Naupaka and beach Naupaka flowers are reunited, the two young lovers will be together again"

I struggle during the winter with my skin, the dryness really causes me issues. I've been making sure this winter I learn more about my body, what it needs and how to give it what it needs to keep any of those unpleasant winter skin issues at bay. That's what this product line is is all about. Honoring what our bodies need through this next season.
