Ghost pipe

This is my first year finding ghost pipe, and I was so excited. I was walking through the woods with a man that means the world to me and has the same love for nature and a sense of adventure and exploration. He led us off our regular path to our sunset spot into the woods, and we stumbled upon hundreds of patches of ghost pipe. We hopped back on the 4wheeler to grab everything I needed to tincture them in the field and headed back out to sustainably harvest them.

Ghost pipe is a potent and controversial plant, sometimes mistaken as a fungus (I was also under this impression for a lot of years). However, it's a perennial parasitic wildflower that taps into underground mycorrhizal fungi. They're incredibly delicate, so much so that tincturing them on site in the field is recommended. The tincture ends up turning and incredible dark blue/purple.

As I dove deeper into this plant, I learned of a beautiful and unseen collaboration happening under the surface. Albeit parasites, they do play an important role in our ecosystems. These white, almost translucent flowers don't produce chlorophyll, so they do not photosynthesize. However, they have cleverly developed special root tips built for nutrient exchange from the mycorrhizal fungi networks that donate sugars and nutrients.

Now, for the controversial side of things. These plants have a long history of being used as medicine. A very powerful and potent plant to which you need to be mindful of dosing (5-15 drops per dose and always starting at the lower end). Ghost Pipe is known for its affinity to the nervous system and pain receptors. It is considered an antinociceptive that modulates sensory input. Calming anxiety, over stimulation, PTSD, and boosting moods, as well as aiding to ease both acute and chronic physical pain and emotional pain. It's also been studied in Western medicine for its antispasmodic and anticonvulsant capacity, too, making it useful for seizures, muscle spasms, and even lung conditions
